Watching Tatting Dry...

I had to dampen the edging in order to get ready to join the end elements. While it was drying, I started a very small motif from a Georgia Seitz book, a design by Doretha Albee.

I used a sample thread, sent to me by Liyarra. Size 12 Finca. I am not impressed with this thread as it is way too soft, and very difficult to un-tat without shredding it to bits. Pretty purple colours, though. : )

There are 12 repeats in this pattern, so I won’t be able to finish it in this thread. However, I like it well enough to tat it again in a firmer thread, now that I understand the pattern better. This is the second time I attempted it.

Someone was not impressed with either piece.

  1. I agree, buddy, it would be so much simpler if they would simply give the thread to us. We'd get it all knotted up for them in no time!

  2. The colors in the hanky are super! Finca is not made for tatting, Fox! Alas!

  3. The edging is looking good, very nice with the little engine. And you had the purple to work with while you wait. Too bad the thread isn't as nice as the color looks. But now that you have this pattern down (something good came of the thread) you can do it in a thread you like.

  5. Those purples are gorgeous! So sad the thread isn't tat-friendly! ! ! Hee hee hee . . . maybe if you rubbed a little tuna or catnip on the tatting Gian might get a different thought-bubble! ;) (He's such a handsome guy! ! !)

  7. I'm waiting for tatting to dry too. Worth trying different threads, some work better than others, and at least now you know the pattern is worth doing. Can't wait to see the finished hanky!

  8. I am tatting the Renulek in perle cotton and I agree about the softness. You don't get the crisp look. But, and this is a big deal to me, the cordonnets have been chewing up my hands and I'm enjoying the softness. Mine is size 8 though, so not as fine.

I have to be careful when untatting, and you can only do it once on a section of thread. If you do it a second time, the thread is usually too fatigued to use again. Especially if I had to open a ring. Which of course NEVER happens. :O I love that purple!

  9. Is that like watching paint dry?…

Your hanky looks just great. I also like the edging in two purples. It reminds me of a pattern to make a doily in one pass… (off on the search).

  10. Found it! In size 10, it makes a big enough piece, in one pass for a sizeable doi… table decoration. I made a one in March 2012 (took a bit of searching!). What will you make with yours?

    1. Found it as well! Yours is very, very pretty. Love the design in ecru. I might try it in one colour and perhaps beige or white...I'll see what I have. It is a lovely pattern for a table doi....decoration! You are quite right. : )

  11. Oh Mr. G! He and Pip need to get together and talk about their crazy tatting friends! Your edgings both look wonderful, I still haven't gotten up the nerve to try one! Someday...
